Summary

The Xiao'er Lun is a narrative text from the Dunhuang Bianwen (敦煌變文) genre, a popular form of literature that flourished during the Tang Dynasty (618–907). Characterised by its mixed format of alternating prose and rhymed verse for recitation, the bianwen tradition often drew on Buddhist themes for moral edification. This text, found in Juan 7 (44), features a dialogue in which a child outsmarts Confucius, subverting conventional hierarchy.
